Term Limits and Dual Office Holding on Freeholders' Agenda

The agenda for tonight's Freeholder meeting includes resolutions supporting Assembly bill A2481, which prohibits dual office holding with no grandfathering, and Assembly Concurrent Resolution A261, which ammends the state constitution to limit the terms all elective office holders in New Jersey, except governor, to twelve years.

Assemblywoman Amy Handlin is the sponsor of both pieces of legislation. Handlin introduced A2481 in February of 2006, shortly after she took office. Assemblyman Sean Kean is a co-sponsor of the bill, which has langished in committee.

Handlin introduced ACR261 on June 11, 2007.

As an update...the Freeholders did pass a term limit on the Director position, but it expires every Dec. 31st and has to be renewed. Again, they should all agree to voluntary term limits...take a pledge...or just start making it a tradition and go with an honor system of stepping down after the one year term unless you are voted in for a second year. Then you would have to step down after the two years and give someone else a chance. Its not only the right thing to do, its fair.
