Not so fast

Update:

County Clerk Claire French informs me that the election to decide the Matawan Mayoral race will be held on January 15, 2008. The cost of the election will be paid by the taxpayers of Matawan.

French does not expect that the Council seat will also be decided during that election, "but anything could happen," she said. The Matawan or County GOP, or another interested citizen would have to go to court in order for the Council seat to be decided by the voters, rather than the Matawan Democrats.

French encourages Matawan voters to vote via absentee ballot in the January 15 election, especially in light of the probability of weather keeping voters from the polls.

Matawan Democrats have submitted three candidates to the Borough Council to select a council person to replace Meghan Mullaney, who resigned her position on November 14.

Under normal circumstances this would be the appropriate procedure to fill a vacany, but these are not normal circumstances.

Matawan has a yet to be scheduled election coming up due to the fact that the Mayor's race resulted in a tie on November 6.

It seems to be that it would be a good idea, and legal, to fill the Council vacancy during the same election to decide who shall serve as Mayor.

It would also be a good idea to hold the election on February 5, the day of the Presidental Primary, since the voting machines will be there anyway.
