Primary choices

For U.S. Senate: Dick Zimmer.

With a credible congressional record to run on, a strong fiscal conservative and the ability to raise the money to make the general election a race, Dick Zimmer is the best GOP choice against Frank Lautenberg, the likely Democratic nominee.

State Senator Joe Pennacchio ran a good campaign with little money. However, he would spend most of the general election campaign defending his crazy manifesto.

With no money and no constituency, Murray Sabrin and his team resorted to outrageous antics to garner attention as if they had nothing to lose. Unfortunately, they have lost their credibility and any ability to forward their message in a GOP that badly needs reform. Beneath the nonsense is a good and important message that is not being heard.

For the 6th Congressional District: James Hogan.

Despite his ties to Sabrin and some of his own "out of his mind" ideas, young Hogan exhibits an energy and desire to make a difference and take it to Frank Pallone in a quixotic endeavor to unseat an incumbent congressmen.

Judge Bob McLeod has a grasp of the issues and the ability to articulate why Pallone does not represent the values of district residents, but he doesn't have the voice to be heard. A shy man who is more prone to fade into a crowd than stand out, McLeod does not have the temperament of a candidate. The GOP would be well served if McLeod took Hogan under his wing. Together they could put some chinks in Pallone's armour for a future credible opponent, if there ever is one.

The other guy, Peter something, sent a letter to likely primary voters, but otherwise has done nothing to warrant consideration.

For Senate I have to wonder if Dick Zimmer really wants it. The party hierarchy was desperate for a candidate and he still wasn't even on that list. I agree with you on his record, but I'll probably just write in the name Art Gallagher because beneath it all, I'm just a big suck up.

For Congress, I disagree with your choice, but I think your assessment is on the money. Hogan is energetic, but naive. MacLeod has the experience and the intelligence, but lacks the fire needed to unseat Pallone. Personally, I like going with the more qualified candidate.

Art: The Courier received a lovely letter from Mr. McLeod regarding my FEMA series and how the newspaper is acting as a "mouthpiece" for Frank Pallone.

McLeod seems good at pointing out other officials' politics and "reactive" tactics. Personally, I think the candidate has no taste, no concept of journalism and CLEARLY nothing better to do than write letters with big words to newspapers he knows he'll never grace the pages of. He probably reads Harry Potter, too, referring to the Pallone's "Ministry of Propaganda."

Unless, of course, certain elected officials decide to return my calls one of these days.

Art,

Zimmer voted against the ban on infantacide, otherwise known as partial birth abortion. He voted to raise sales tax, the income tax and for BILLIONS in new spending. He voted against our miliary EVERY time he got a chance and he voted against better border security. He voted against the balanced budget and against medicare reform. He used a race issue against his opponents and he said he other opponents church as started by the KKK. He lost both races. This guy is going to take a lot of good people down with him if he gets the nomination.

Pennacchio is the only choice this year because he has wider appeal. Isn't it about time we stop nomination Republicans that act and vote like Democrats.

Also, he can't raise money. He raised $175,000, that's not enough to pay his attorneys. Pennacchio has the resources to self-fund if necessary. His net worth is close to $15 million and would be willing blow $4 million on this race.

Pennacchio all the way.

Ronald Reagan is right on point. Zimmer cannot win the general election; he will not excite the base (and that is even more costly in this presidential year when the top of the ticket McCain also fails to energize the base) and he is Democrat-lite. Throughtout the past years we have seen that "Democrat-lite" running in a state wide race will always loose to the real Democrat. It is about time Republicans start putting up candidates that are trying to appeal to voters with Republican solutions rather than softer Democrat solutions.

Fundraising is going to be an issue for Zimmer, his pro-abortion position is going to be a problem, his global warming position is going to be a problem, his anti-second amendment position is going to be a problem, and his lack of detailed policy answers is going to be a problem againsts Lautenberg.

When it comes down to, of the two candidates (Sabrin is not a real candidate) Zimmer is the only candidate that cannot win in November. AND he will take A LOT of Republicans on the lower end of the ticket down with him.

Vote Pennacchio.

Sorry, but the only real choice for Senate is Pennacchio. You point to his manifesto as something he'll be attacked on. Attacks against Zimmer will be far worse. Go read Al Raymond's book and you'll learn all about Zimmer's racist campaign activities that will surly be used against him. Plus, $169 in property taxes for 20-something acres of land will not play well with anyone.
