State Senator Sean Kean announced the partial demolition of the Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge will be delayed until after the Fourth of July Weekend.
Kean petitioned DOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri last week to delay the demolition until after the Labor Day weekend. This brief delay is helpful, in that it gives Kean and Highlands Mayor Anna Little more time to arrange alternate routes, including ferry service, to Sandy Hook. Sea Streak Ferry will be offering ferry service from Highlands to Sandy Hook on Saturdays and Sundays.
DOT has previously told a federal judge that bridge construction would not start until mid 2009. The accelerated construction schedule, which many locals speculate is a strategy by DOT and the contractor to make pending litigation mute, left local officials scrambling to arrange alternate traffic routes.

Unbelievable....as I read today a comment in the Asbury Park Press by a Long Beach Island reader that stated something about requiring a test to make sure that politicians can demonstrate some sign of intelligent life.Maybe this is exactly what is needed of excuses we call executives or legislators in Trenton. Makes one wonder "do they ever wake Up''. Good luck to Mayor Little and the powers that be in Highlands and Sea Bright. Unless they are successful,it will be a long hot summer on Route 36 .
This process stinks to high heaven! It is absolutely stupid to partially demolish a bridge that is functioning well before the new bridge is completed. Can't Sea Bright or Highlands find a judge that can issue a stop work order until the legal challenges are concluded? Does DOT work for the taxpayers or is it the other way around?
