EDISON - Former Bogota Mayor and Americans for Prosperity State Director Steve Lonegan told Construction Roundtable members today that large tax cuts are needed quickly to bring back New Jersey's economy. Members of the Construction Roundtable include executives of Anheuser Busch, Pfizer and Merck, among other important companies.
"Countries that cut taxes and created a business friendly climate saw a huge difference in their economies in just two to three years," said Lonegan, Executive Director of Americans For Prosperity Foundation NJ chapter. "New Jersey has the assets and resources to make this change even faster."
"New Jersey currently has the highest taxes in the country, the worst business climate, and the most bloated and out-of-control state government anywhere in America," Lonegan said. "And this will continue as long as the loudest voices Trenton hears are the ones with their hands out looking for your money."
Lonegan's address coincided with Americans for Prosperity's release of the second edition of the "Making New Jersey Competitive" guide.
The booklet compares New Jersey's economic climate with that of other states and draws a direct correlation between high taxes and suppressed economic growth.
Lonegan currently hosts the "Taxpayer Minute" radio feature on stations in New York and Philadelphia, as well as across New Jersey. He has also been sponsoring Taxpayer Action Seminars around New Jersey to educate voters on ways to take on Trenton's big government and win.
The former Mayor led the fight against Governor Jon Corzine's $38 Billion Borrowing and Toll Hike scheme earlier this year. Last year, Lonegan and AFP-NJ activists caused the defeat of two ballot questions that would have increased taxes even more. These were the first ballot questions defeated in 17 years.
"Business owners are frustrated because many have bought into the belief that nothing can be done to save our state. But our victories show that we can save New Jersey. All it takes are people willing to stand up and speak out."
