There's a new scandal in Monmouth County regarding a sewerage authority.
The Asbury Park Press reports that the state pension board is investigating $100K in payments made to former Ocean Township Manager David Kochel for his service on the Ocean Township Sewerage Authority. Kochel has previously been ordered to repay $25K in pension benefits.
The Western Monmouth Sewerage Authority has been plagued with scandal.
What is the purpose of sewerage authorities other than to supplement the income of and provide pensions and health benefits to political cronies?
Earlier this month the Hazlet Township Committee voted to disband its independent sewerage authority and replace it with a sewerage utility run by the township. In theory that should increase accountablity. We'll see how that works out.
I'm not an expert on this matter yet. It seems to me that as we look for ways to reduce the cost of government and to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse, that all "independent" authorities, boards and commissions warrant scrutiny. Sewerage authorities are a good place to start.

The first really decent observation from you in a while.Stick to it and include Middletown (and the republican majority of the last 25 plus years) in your criticisms to be really credible.Maybe home rule should be the next subject to tackle to really start saving the bucks.
