Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce says yesterday’s release of hundreds of pages of government documents sought by Republicans for years confirm top Democratic officials used a clandestine and criminally corrupt process to spend millions of dollars on pet projects for a favored few.
“First the Democrats covered up their tracks by denying the existence of any documents that could be used to follow the money and determine who asked for slush funds and who approved them,” said DeCroce, R-Morris and Passaic. “Now we know that was a lie.
“But what I find just as sickening is how the very same Democrats who were behind the scheme are now trying to cover up their involvement by saying the money went to ‘good causes’ and they were change agents responsible for reforming the system.
“It was never the ‘causes’ that we questioned. It was the process. It’s not about who got the money, but how they got it and why. What we can see clearly now is that some Democrats got money for organizations run by a family member or employers. We can see how some legislators secured funds for towns in which they served as mayor or were paid to represent.
“This entire sorry spectacle stinks, especially since it was going on at a time when Democrats were conniving the people with claims the state budget was so tight that they had no recourse other than to raise taxes, borrow more money and cut property tax relief,” DeCroce added.
The Assembly Republican leader said he found it “offensive” that the documents show Democrats wanted to offer him money for a project just to give themselves political cover.
“The only reason why the Democrats ended this corrupt system was because they knew their actions had caught the attention of federal authorities,” DeCroce said. “And trying to deny any personal responsibility for what transpired by claiming you ‘don’t do e-mail’ reeks of desperation and is an insult to the taxpayers whose money was abused in such a despicable way.”
