Advantage: Corzine

A Farleigh-Dickinson poll released this morning indicates that despite the fact that 75% of voters, including 55% of Democrats, think that New Jersey is headed in the wrong direction, Governor Corzine leads all challengers.

Corzine bests each potential Republican challenger: 40%-33% over Chris Christie, 46%-28% over Steve Lonegan, and 43%-23% over Rick Merkt.

Each of the Republican candidates suffers from poor name recognition:

"Former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie is best known among them, with 44% of all voters and half of Republicans saying they know who he is. Nearly a quarter (23%) say they have a favorable view of Christie while 6% have an unfavorable view, a 4-to-1 ratio in his favor. Meanwhile 71% of all voters and 56% of Republicans say they haven’t heard of former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan and 89% of all voters and 86% of Republicans say they haven’t heard of Assemblyman Rick Merkt."

Among Republicans, 47% have no preference. Christie is favored by 32%, Lonegan by 15%and Merkt 5%.

The Republican primary will be a race for the 47%.

You would think that considering the condition of this state that people would vote for "Unkown" ahead of Corzine.

This place is freaking hopeless.

We need to openly talk state politics with people at work. I find the fact that Corzine is winning every possible face-off here very disturbing, considering how pathetic his job performance has been.

Corzine is a union-supporting bum who gives jobs to his unqualified friends (Kris Kolluri, Jeanne Fox and Lucille Davy have NO place in state government), raises taxes in the worst of times, increases the state budget by 20% since he took office, and whose policies have led to New Jersey having the worst business climate in the country. Affordable housing and paid family leave? Things are only about to get worse.

Anyone, ANYONE would be better than Corzine. And since the media is in the tank for him, it's up to us to convince people of this.

As I've said, Christie needs to define himself. He has to an extent done so as U. S. Attorney, now he needs to fill out the profile as to what type of governor he will be.
The Democrats have already begun trying to define Christie, by whining that he only prosecutes Democrats, by saying that he wrote checks to the RNC, even saying that he had little criminal trial experience. (Tell that one to Ray O'Grady or Frank Abate)
What the Bozo-coiffed Corzine has to his advantage is the fact that a certain percentage of people in this state would vote for a sponge as long as it were a Democrat. Christie needs to convince the rest of the voters to vote for him, and not just against Corzine.

Christie made a tactical error. The entire time in office, his primary concern was never losing a case. That's nice, but it means he didn't go after a lot of criminals that he could of, most of whom would have been convicted. That works against him. There are a lot of people in towns in which he never did anything, like Manalapan, that know he didn't do his job there. That accounts for some of the negative and the fact that he left so many corrupt towns alone completely accounts for his reduced name recognition. Hopefully his replacement won't make the same mistake.

We'll see. His replacement will be a Democrat. Their track record isn't so hot when it comes to prosecuting corrupt pols.
Their priority is usually to protect Democratic officeholders. Can you say, "Peter Harvey"? "Zulima Farber"?
