I'm a Libertarian radical when is comes to marriage equality. I think government should get out of the marriage business. Marriage is a sacramental distinction and should be left to churches. All domestic partnerships should be civil unions and there should be no discrimination based on race, gender, religion or species.
But my opinion is not likely to carry the day.
Neither will Governor Corzine's.
Whoever shot this video of Corzine at the Human Rights Gala last weekend gave the NJ GOP a huge gift.
Call me Rovian. I don't care. But I can't wait to see this video on my TV this fall followed with the tag, "I'm Chris Christie and I approved this message" or "I'm Steve Lonegan and I approved this message" or "Paid for New Jerseyans committed to traditional marriage."

Actually, I don't think our Gubernatorial nominee should touch this issue.
Seeing how as just about everybody cares about their wallets right now, there's plenty of better ways to spend campaign money on advertising that won't go after a certain constituency in New Jersey.
Also, why anger some progressive equal rights people who may cross over because Corzine has played this song just about every year and nothing has gotten done? He's too scared to tell them that they'll have to keep waiting because he's too scared to really push the issue before re-election and the Assembly is treating it like a hot potato.
Of course I'm for Marriage Equality (although I like the libertarian viewpoint you support too), so this is just my point of view.

You're probably right about the lame duck vote that seems inevitable on this issue.
Now let's say our Gubernatorial nominee uses the issue against Corzine, there's a potential for a big drawback there.
First you galvanize the major supporters of gay rights against you. Granted they'd have to be pretty big one-issue voters and most are probably on Corzine's side. But there's no proof of that..seeing as how he's essentially telling them he'll push it when it's convient for him.
Then you also look like your playing the distraction game. Everybody cares about their wallets and their taxes, bringing up the gay marriage issue at this time would seem like a hail mary play and a sign of struggling. While I like certain smaller issues and think they can be used to our advantage, this one may be left best alone since it's a "social" issue.
Like I said though, if some organization wants to come in here and run ads..there's nothing that can be done to stop them. My only worry with that is a flashback to when I was volunteering in the 2007 14th District race and the Dem Assembly candidates turned the third party anti-gay marriage group coming after them into days plus of good stories and publicity for them. After the dust settled, that anti-gay marriage group lost every race it got involved in.
Maybe you're right Eric, maybe not. There will have to be polling on the issue.
It seems to me that we can make inroads in the cities with this issue and school choice.
There is a reason Corzine told the gay community he didn't want to raise the issue in 2008. It seems to me that the same logic would apply in 2009. Just running ads of the video with no other commentary would get Corzine talking publically about an issue he has intentionally avoided. That could help us on many fronts.

Ahh see that's different then what I thought you meant. Interesting strategy...still think there could be better ways to spend campaign cash. (unless we had Corzine-like money)
The city strategy is an interesting one, but that's betting that they tag those issues to certain candidates. They might vote a certain way on a ballot question, but may not associate a candidate with that stance, or come to the conclusion that one issue is enough to sway their vote. That being said, for the sake of Tommy, we can't ignore those areas at all.
