Politickernj is reporting that Congressman Frank Pallone has endorsed former Neptune Mayor Mike Beson as the Democratic Nominee for Monmouth County Freeholder.
Beson will compete against Middletown Township Committee member Sean Byrnes for the nomination at the Democrats convention on Saturday.
Pallone injecting himself into the Dems local nominating process is part of the long struggle for control of the Monmouth Democratic party between the local Democrats, lead by Chairman Victor Scudiery and the Trenton Democrats, represented locally by Pallone, Freeholder John D'Amico, and the Red Bank law frim of McKenna, DuPont, Higgins and Stone.
Pallone, along with Jon Corzine and Ellen Karcher asked Scudiery to resign his chairmanship in 2005 over Vic's asking then Senator Joe Palaia to use senatorial courtesy to block Luis Valentin's appointment as Monmouth County prosecutor. Palaia declined and Acting Governor Richard Codey appointed Valentin, then an Essex County resident. Scudiery's choice was Middletown Attorney Allen Falk. Falk has long served as parliamentarian of the Monmouth County Democrats.
Beson is an embedded Trenton insider. He is a principal in the Trenton polticial consulting firm Open Door Media. He was briefly in the race for last year's Dem Freeholder nominations which went to Amy Mallet and Glenn Mason. Mallet is now a Freeholder and Mason is now the Monmouth County coordinator of emergency management.

Who is the parliamentarian for the Monmouth GOP?
At least someone understands the benefit of a Southern Monmouth candidate :-)
wrong Art - Mckenna and crowd are with Scudiery (Sean Byrnes is their former law partner) and Pallone and Scudiery are united against attacks from Norcross and/or Lynch.
Also Scudiery is neutral in this race.
Its not as simple as you make it out as.
Agreed with anon number 2 a lil bit...Pallone's backing is only a head nod to his former staffer.
Pallone supposedly called Byrnes to push him in the race, so we'll see who rings up the votes on Saturday. Beson is more embedded though, so he could pick it up.
Pallone has long controlled Scudiery and Monmouth County. But there have been disagreements from time to time. Pallone gets testy when Scudiery wakes up and pretends he's actually the county chairman, like when he backed McGreevey instead of Pallone for governor. Pallone is not happy about the way Scudiery treated McMorrow, leading to a sure loss in November and possible losses in Assembly races because of a weaker top of the ticket. Pallone knows that Scudiery reports more to Lesniak now than he does to Pallone. He needs to take control of the county back and teach Scudiery a lesson. Hence, the nomination of Beson.
Pallone's strength has always come from Hovnanian's money. Hovnanian is a little short on cash right now and so Pallone has lost influence. Lesniak controls Manalapan and Marlboro. Look for Brynes to sweep Manalapan, Marlboro and Middletown, giving him a lead that won't be overcome by the other towns.
Whoever the Democrats nominate must be defeated in November. We need to rid Monmouth County of the Out of County (Camden, Gloucester, Union, etc.) influence and put the Board of Chosen Freeholders back in the service of the people of Monmouth County.
"Chosen" as used here refers to the choice of the voters of the county, not the choice of a few bosses in smoke-filled rooms in Cherry Hill, West Deptford or Elizabeth.
you go, Abe..dead-on correct, as usual.. listen up, people, and start working..
