Word's Out

Wally Edge is reporting what many party insiders have been whispering about and working towards, that Sherrif Joe Oxley is considering running for County Chairman and that Fred may not stand for re-election.

Oxley has been exhibiting behind the scenes leadership since our convention in February and has prevented our party from even more embarrassment and chaos than we have experienced recently.

Joe has broad appeal amongst the various factions of our party as well as with the general electorate. He would be an excellent choice for chairman.

ARE YOU INSANE. I love Joe Oxley he is a great Sheriff but why would you want an elected official to have that job. It would be akin to hanging a porkchop around his neck and making him run through a pack of hungry wolves.
Bad for Joe and Bad for the party. Bad idea. Very Bad.

and you would suggest who?

I think the job makes sense for Joe. He obviously has ambitions behind the Sheriff's office, and given all the national acclaim he's gotten there, what's left for him to prove?

As chairman, he could re-enter the private sector and make some real money. If he brings the Monmouth GOP back together, keeps winning takes back the 12th district, holds onto the 11th and 13th, and recruits serious candidates to oppose Pallone and Holt, he will in serious consideration for many future jobs on the state and federal level. Judge, NJ Attorney
General (if we ever regain Trenton), Congressman, US Senator.

A sitting elected offical may not be ideal as a chairman, but the party needs someone who can stitch it back together...fast. oxley can.

he'd be a damn good chairman. strongest name i've heard thrown out there thus far, IMHO.

don't underestimate that guy. he's figured out the angles before anybody else has gotten up for their morning cheerios.

County chairmen who were elected officials at the same time:
Ben Danskin: Freeholder, then County Clerk.
Russ Woolley: County Clerk.

County chairmen who were former elected officials:
Bill Dowd: State Assembly.
Fred Kniesler: Mayor of Upper Freehold.

The only county chairman in recent years who was never an elected official is Fred Niemann.

D&K...I'm working on a piece about campaign finance and would like to re-read Tommy's column on that subject from a month or so ago. Would you mind emailing me the text or posting it here?

Thanks

Abe Today is not yesterday. It would be a huge mistake to put a sitting County or State level official in as County Chairman in the current climate. Every time something goes wrong that has anything to do with republicans the chairmans picture would go on the front page and be associated with the problem. Their election defeat would be garaunteed.
Now if as WHS suggests he gave up his office I would say great. but I do not see that happening.
Other names.
There are a lot of people who are or have been in the trenches that could do the job well.
Any number of Municipal Chairman past or present, Municipal elected officials and county political operatives could do the job effectivly.

joe oxley is a good and fair man. if joe had been the chairman after dowd, none of this nonsense would ever have happened.

there are damn few people in politics that aren't owned by anyone, can't be pushed around and won't sell their integrity. joe oxley is one of those people.

if he has any detractors, it's just an issue of envy. if he would have the job (as he would have to become the ringmaster of a very strange and sometimes dark circus) then republicans should consider him a prime candidate. joe has managed to serve in high office without becoming "one of the boys" and he has performed his service with great integrity and even courage. i can't say that about many people these days.

leadership and leaders aren't common. they're rare.

Mr. Seward, off the top of my head some quick names.
Giannel,Dimaso,Apostolou,Giamonco, Eckdahl,Giordano,
I do not know if any of them want it but any of them would be worth thinking about.
Cicero. Where did you get this sycophant stuff. Did I say anywhere in my post we should keep Fred? Regardless of what talents Fred may or may not have he has p"d off too many people to continue to govern the party effectivly.
I do not have an issue with Joe. I only have an issue with Joe holding both positions.

TR:

Ginnell: OK.

DiMaso: Not experienced outside her own town, factionalized. Maybe much later.

Apostolou: As good as Oxley at communicating, knowing everyone and creating consensus? Nope.

Giordano: Factionalized; can't get the grassroots. Doesn't even know there's grassrooots.

Eckdahl: Good guy, sound mayor, experienced and savvy; can't bring the party back in its current state of affairs...takes a "great communicator." Would be good in better days.

Great communicators are the hardest thing in the world to find. You can be the best leader in the world. Heck, Moses spoke through Aaron. But, there are times when that guy or gal at the front of the parade has to be the one talking and creating consensus. I don't think now is a time for someone less than that. Since the real Ronald Reagan has gone on to his reward, probably the closest thing that's local is Joe Oxley.

Well I could name another 5 or 6 potential Chairman but you guys (and gals) would find fault with them because nobody is perfect.
I still contend that one of the biggest mistakes we could make is to make some poor county or state level elcted official our Chairman. It is a recipe for loosing the office.
Remember I said this. On second thought don't bother. I will have too much fun reminding Y'all.

TR...care to make another wager?

Teddy Roosevelt said...

Nope , I do not like wagering that something bad will happen.
