Atlantic Highlands Mayor Fred Rast introduced Freeholder candidate Kim Spatola to Steve Lonegan's event last night as an NRA member. Based on this photo of Rast and Spatola, Fred should know.
Lonegan's event at the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands was surprisingly well attended given the weather. The crowd of about 100 included many familiar faces from Monmouth GOP circles, as well as quite a few new faces. One newcomer announced that he left the Republican party last year because it was indistinguishable from the Democratic Party. He asked Lonegan how he would lead the GOP back to its conservative roots. "By winning and providing principled conservative leadership," Lonegan replied, which prompted Leonardo's Andrew Bane to announce that Steve's remarks were "sending a warm tingly feeling down his leg."
Based upon what I observed on Monday evening, the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination is far from over, pending the outcome of Thrusday's ELEC meeting, perhaps.

Unfortunately I doubt a real Republican can win in Monmouth County.
You wrote an article about how the Dems run till they win. I think we should too, why not give Curley another shot?? It is not like he got killed. I think he is Monmouth Counties best candidate!!
My wife and I support Palin 2012. Associating to the anti-corruption Sarah Palin is a definite Plus! Having a Republican candidate actually FOR the first AND second amendment rights IS a PLUS!
I don't know the other candidate but I am leaning this way today.
I like Curley, too. His record is great and he would need very little to get enough votes to win. I would be happy to support him. Did he enter the race?

Lots of good reasons why this would be a mistake. Did you follow his candidacy? My recollection is his race started with a resignation from Red Bank Council seat because taxes were too high and he wanted to move into a bigger house in Middletown. There were a number of blunderous misstatements along the way. Final crescendo was a Politic NJ rant where he referred to his arch nemisis as "Sumbag and skeeves". You can quote him on that! One mistake is enough with this young man. He needs to mature before running again.

Although Barbara McMorrow is respected on both sides of the aisle, I still like the Republicans chances in Monmout County. Let's face it, the difference in 2008 was the unusually high turnout of Obama voters in Asbury Park and Neptune. I would bet, for the most part, that will be their one and only time voting until Obama is up in 2012. Take them out of the mix, couplerd with another high turnout, and the growing anti-Corzine sentiment and a decent Republican candidate has a good shot.
