The Asbury Park Press editorial board wants the Monmouth County Freeholders to reconsider its decision to close the Youth Detention Center.
Message to the GOP Freeholders: Don't look back.
This issue has been studied and restudied in 2008 and 2009. The Democrats chose to keep the center open last year and fore sake the savings the closure will yield for Monmouth County's property tax payers.
The APP says the Republicans gave inadequate notice that they planned to vote to close the center and that Democratic Freeholder John D'Amico's recycled concerns about the closure should be addressed. D'Amico raised the same concerns last year when he voted to keep the YDC open. The only thing that has changed is D'Amico doesn't have three votes anymore.
Elections have consequences. Republican John Curley, the third vote to close the center, ran in last year's election with his position to close the center. An election campaign is more than adequate notice.
Let D'Amico keep raising his questions about closing the center in his re-election bid this fall. Let him make reopening the center, spending $12+ million to fix the structure and $2.5 million more per year to detain the kids a campaign issue. Rob Clifton and his running mate can campaign on how they saved the taxpayers money and improved the lives of the kids they sent to a superior facility in Middlesex County.

all last year the APP wrote about the waste and need to close to YDC, now they ask that the Freeholders go back and re-evaluate their decision. Hmm, know wonder their sales are dropping- Life is choices APP you can't have it both ways. The kids will be better served in Middlesex. The facility is state of the art, education and rehabilitation is the most important issuefor these kids convenience for their family is not the responsibility of the county. Let's all remember these kids aren't away at camp this is supposed to be their punishment for a crime they committed.
