John Bennett files for GOP County Committee in Red Bank

Former State Senator John Bennett has filed a petition to run for the GOP County Committee seat currently held by Red Bank Municipal Chairman Jack Minton. Bennett, a long time Little Silver resident moved to Red Bank a year and a half ago.

Bennett told MoreMonmouthMusings that he has no agenda other than to contribute to Red Bank Republicans winning more elections. "They're 50-100 votes away from winning the town. If I can help bring new people and new energy to the process, that's what I want to do."

Bennett said that he has no desire to be Municipal Chairman, or to seek other elective office. He hopes that he can serve on the committee and that Minton would continue as chairman.

Former Red Bank GOP Chairman Jim Gianell said that he expects Minton will prevail in a competitive race and hopes that Bennett thinks better of the challenge and withdraws.

County Chairman Adam Puharic, who ran as "a uniter" for chairman two years ago is acting as an "igniter" in a potentially explosive race over a less than significant seat. Puharic was quoted by the Asbury Park Press as follows:

“It appears John Bennett wants to help the local Red Bank Republicans, and if it's a question of which person running has done more for the party and is likely to help more, Bennett is a good choice,'' Puharic said. “I'm not sure what constructive things the other person has done for the party over the last two years.''

I've always been a big John Bennett fan. He got a raw deal from teh APP, and he did noting wrong, at least not according to the rules he was playing under.

I am troubled by the apparant Puharic connection, whether intentional or not, it is unseemly for the county chair to insert himself into such a local issue.

But John Bennett is nothing but an asset to the Party.

I beg to differ Senator,

John Bennetts problems are legion
1. He is a Rhino.
2. He was in a leadership role in the republican party at a time when we tanked.
3. He was in a leadership position when the Republicans contributed to out of control spending.
4.He helped screw Schundler
5.He agreed to a plan for redistricting that screwed republicans.
6. In my opinion he was an ineffective do nothing legislator
7. The APP did not screw him.I agree he did nothing illegal but he was greedy and that was his downfall.

John Bennett is a pleasnt enough fellow to chat with but he needs to leave politics.

Ok...so he was being paid over $100K a year as Marlboro attorney and then was able to bill $150 and hour for special projects which he contracted out to another attorney at $60 an hour. And you can't see anything wrong with that Senator? He double billed the township...a clerical error..which can happen to anyone...twice. And you don't see anything wrong with that either Senator? He had his wife AND his mother in law on the state payroll. And you don't see anything wrong with THAT Senator?

Didn't you skewer Ellen Karcher for using the same legal advantages afforded to her where she did nothing wrong, but you and your ilk raked her over the coals.

Can you say "Double Standard"?

It's only a CC seat. Who cares!

Stop the complaining. This sounds like alot of fun. Maybe i should move there just so i can vote.

Make no mistake, I am biased. John Bennett is a friend of mine. However, no bias is needed to see that he was treated poorly.

Ellen Karcher's problem was one of hypocrisy. She ran on a ticket of making things better, and she was utterly ineffective on all fronts. She also partook in the "perks" and loopholes for which Bennett was criticized.

Say what you want about John Bennett with the crystal clear vision of hindsight. However, what he did with his jobs was not illegal (and still isn't) and was done by many, even to this day.

Don't lambaste the man for doing exactly what everyone else was doing, but making more money off of it than most.

The fact of the matter is, the rules changed in 2003, and he was caught on the wrong side of the change. But until that point, he operated within the rules.

He took his lumps, too.

So, as long as its legal, it doesn't matter what it smells like? Isn't there supposed to at least be the perception of doing the right thing as opposed to seeing just how much you can get away with? Maybe he should have asked whether it was morally right instead of just legal.

And yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing to have....I think that some people might even call that "history".

Call me crazy, but if you are in that position, and you work the system to the extreme, as he did, and you lose the public's trust, as he did, then its time to just retire from politics and keep working for the hundreds of thousands of dollars that the municipilaties pay you. He is also the Colts Neck attorney, and I also think he's a very pleasant man. Just wrong on some things.

And yes, he's certainly taken his lumps

You can't really mean that. The standard of what is right is what everyone else is doing?

Everyone? Hmmm I did not see Steve Coredemus doing it when he was in office. Joe Palia?
Certainly Bennett was a real champion at it. He did it far more then any other legislator from Monmouth County.

This is part of the problem. Failure to admit that the system was abused.
