MoreMonmouthMusings has been approved to cover the Republican National Convention live in Minneapolis/St Paul, September 1-4.
On the plus side, it is a honor to be invited to participate in a historic occasion and to be considered a worthy member of the new media. And, I might get onto FoxNews before Tommy does.
On the down side, bloggers are being relegated to the nose bleed seats with no access to the convention floor. This will make getting good Monmouth/New Jersey related stories something of a challenge. Then, there is taking time away from my business at a historically demanding time, the considerable expense, and missing an important zoning board hearing in Highlands. All of these down sides can be managed.
But I keep wondering, will my readers care? I could make the effort, incur the expense, and have a satisfying personal experience, but if my readers are not enthused by the coverage, I am not sure it will be worth it.

How often do you get the chance to go to a National Convention?

I believe it will be a rewarding experience for you. So go for it you only live once!
Even if you don't get to interview anyone of note, it's still an experience you can't pass up.
Try setting up interviews with members of the Jersey delegation before you go, who knows you may get invited to a couple of events.
I went to Philadelphia in 2000 during the convention. It was something Bret Schundler put together. It was a great experience and that wasn't even in the convention.
Go have fun, just watch out for the guy in the stall next to you at the airport.

I voted no on the poll, only because I honestly could really care less about the convention. Keep in mind, I'm already experiencing voter apathy this year because they've covered this election way too much. That and I obviously already know who I'm voting for.
That being said, you should go for yourself, not us blog readers. You'll get to see some good speakers, and who knows you may see a VEEP selection since it seems like everyone's playing the waiting game.
I'm sure I'd rather read about the convention from your perspective than anywhere else anyway..haha.

First, DO NOT miss the chance to go. Blog a running diary of everything you see (there'll be enough coverage out there of the big speeches).
Second, If you get on Fox News before me, you have to give me a secret shout out like Carol Burnett used to do by tugging on her ear.
I know - you have to work the words "Republican Maverick" and "traitor" in the same sentence.
Go for it! As long as it doesn't jeopardize your job, why not go? Look forward to reading about the convention from your perspective.

I'd say to the convention Art, but don't go to try to be the news, go to have fun. I like to look at life as a learning experience and I'd bet that if you go to the convention and just blog about what you see and do, it'll be much more interesting than writing about what the candidates say in their speechs - the MSM will cover that garbage - I want someone to cover what we don't get to see on TV or in the papers.... of course, you don't want to end up with a blog like the one from the 04 convention, that wouldn't be good either.

Having attended New Orleans in '88, Houston in'92, SanDiego in'96, Phila. in '00, and NYC in '04, (twice as an alternate delegate),if you believe in our unique American political system, (even with its flaws), and still get the chills at the National Anthem and the show of hoards of elephants, signs, buttons, hollering, bands, cheering, state pride, droning postulations, and tv- coverage fun, and seeing history in the making, and can tell your grandkids you were there, GO,GO,GO.. well worth the State badge fees, hotel, air,food, pol.vendors and "stuff" of all kinds, missing the best parties if you're not a delegate or alternate, but seeing a different city and feeling part of one of the two biggest ( and the best), parties in the nation, anyway, "Nike, just do it"- is impossible not to get caught up in it all..while conv's are largely ceremonial now, it's nonetheless the best of what's good about being free to do it, in the first place!.. I may or may not go for a sixth round, but you definitely should: tell all the cynical Dems, libs and "drive-by's",of the media- yahoos, we are alive, and well, and will kick their collective butts in Nov!..
