The real John Curley has shown up.
According the an article is today's Asbury Park Press Republican Freeholder candidate John Curley has publicly disagreed with his running mate, Freeholder Director Lillian Burry, as well as the four other Freeholders over extending the contract of the law firm Cleary, Alfieri, Jones and Hoyle. James Cleary of the firm was fired from his assistant county counsel post by Burry in June because he owes $115K in retirement and health benefits to the scandal plagued Western Monmouth Utilities Authority.
Curley correctly asserted that Clearly still benefits from the work the firm performs.
The Freeholder Board correctly decided to let the firm finish the work it has already started, as changing lawyers in the middle of a case is a waste of money.
Democratic Freeholder candidate Amy Mallet and her running mate agreed with Curley.
Curley's move was smart politics. He effectively took an issue that Mallet and her running mate were attempting to use in the campaign away from them. That Democratic Freeholders, Director wannabee John D'Amico and Barbara McMorrow voted with Burry further takes the issue of the table for the campaign. The Dems will have to come up with something else, which won't be easy because nobody can name a place in New Jersey were Democrats are doing a better job governing than Republicans are doing in Monmouth County.
Some Republicans will no doubt grumble that Curley is "going off the ranch" and say that this is what they were worried about during the screening process. The majority will say, "that's right and that's why we nominated him." Like Anna Little bucking her party in the 2006 campaign and during her service as Freeholder, Curley knows that the voters want free thinkers holding office.

As a Republican, I support John Curley wholeheartedly. There is no reason to march lockstep with the party if you don't agree. Perhaps Freeholder Burry can learn some lessons here.
You.ve got that right....the people want representation not just party animals. Give the serving freeholders credit for seeing changing lawyers on current litigation wastes money ,a unilateral decision. Maybe the future will also see Anna Little return for another day as she was a public servant not a politician and did serve the people of this county well.Good luck to John Curley in November as it seems he's also a people advocate.
I would hope no Republicans say he's going off the reservation.
He's allowed to think for himself and make his own decisions, and frankly I think it's a great move by him.
I think it's pretty damn obvious that not every Republican agrees on every single issue..to say the least. That's why we're the big tent party.
Like I said before, I can't wait to vote for him and Freehold Director Burry on November 4th.
