18 votes

For the second year in a row the results of the Monmouth County Freeholder race will be determined by provisional ballots. With all the machines and absentee ballots counted, Freeholder Director Lillian Burry has won a second term on the board. Democrat Amy Mallet leads Republican John Curley by 18 votes. There are a estimated 3000 provisional votes to be sorted through, validated or invalidated and then counted. We may not know the results for a week or so.

McCain wins County by over 12,000, dems run two people for Freeholder with no real ability, yet pending count of povis ballots GOP loses one seat and barely holds onto the other. Sends a clear message to GOP leadership keep running party hacks and the county will be run 100% by dems in a few elections.

Let's hope John Curley can pull this out. He was BY FAR the best candidate in this race.

Curley for Freeholder, aye

so much for a presidential year meaning a lock for republicans in Monmouth county.
I hope the party throws that theory out the window

Was there a real campaign manager? Was there an internal poll taken? How do you lose a race where the top of the ticket wins by over 12k votes? I can guarantee we wouldn't be asking these questions under previous chairmen. Of course we shot ourselves in the foot the day Curley was added to the ticket instead of DiMaso.

Anonymous said...

Of course the party orginization was no help. They seldom are. They had no website, nowhere to request information or anyway to get the vote out. That being said, DiMaso would have been down with Mason had she been picked. John did a great job basically on his own. I'm not really sure Burry helped either!

I have a question...how do three people on the ticket run basically even and a fourth runs 8,000 votes behind? Unless there was some grand underground effort to bullet vote Mallet, something is extremely fishy.

County candidates totally underperformed top and bottom of ticket. McCain and Zimmer won along with many local victories too in different regions of the county--middletown, wall, eatontown, matawan. Nobody knows curley outside of red bank vicinity, I think town by town breakdown would likely show this. Outside of stupid yard signs, was there even a campaign? So much for Jen Beck trying to become a political boss.

The only thing fishy is that the best candidates the two parties can put forward were the 4 clowns running.

Not one of them was as qualified as the incumbent who decided not to run again.

Typical example of the machines pushing forward their puppets to exclude and drive out real public servants.

Just like Obama, for the most part all we get are totally unqualified candidates selected by the party machine to do what they are told.

It is apparent to anyone with a brain what happened. Republicans who were angered by things Mr. Curley said both before and during the campaign voted for mallet.
It is called cutting off your nose to spite your face.

dimaso? the raffle ticket lady?

Anonymous said...

It would seem to me that the Burry people bullet voted and left Curley out to dry. Oh well typical politics. Too bad, John Curley would have made a good Freeholder.

Just because he didn't march lock- step with the supposed powers that be in the Republican Party actuslly would have been a benefit to Monmouth County residents. I personally know a lot of Democrats who switched over to vote for John.

Take a look in house, I believe Burry sabotaged Curley.......Just my thought!

You know I did not like either of our candidates that much but I certainly was not going to vote to give control to the democrats. Not everyone in our party thinks that way. I thought we were past all this petty crap on both sides but apparently the Monmouth County Republicans have not learned their lesson and as a result thie county will be run by machine democrats.
Curly did not know when to keep his big mouth shut and the other idiots did not know when to ignore him and wanted payback for his attacks on barham.
Burry may be a lot of things but she is not stupid enough to deep six curley and wind up a minority on the board. It is obvious though not everyone in our party has that much brains.
One other thing. If we had run the "raffle Ticket lady" we would still control the County.

The whole point of this tirade is that both factions in our party better get over themselves and stop being a bunch of moronic A- holes.

That was well said, and all very true!! It is a shame that the County has no real organization. The Democrats pump hundreds opf thousands of dollars into Monmouth County and we do nothing about it. Maybe now people will see.....

Money is not going to solve the problem; money IS the problem. It matters not what party it is ... there are those behind the scenes in positions of power who could give a crap less about Republican principles in favor of feathering their own nests through contract awards, 'rainmaking' for themselves and their businesses, etc. Pumping more money into this organization in its present state is like throwing money at a bad debt. True Republicans need to hold their local leaders accountable and smoke out these self-serving individuals. It's time for tough, strong leadership...perhaps alarming to some....and a good housecleaning.

Maybe the first "anonymous, and afew others," should "man" or "woman" up, and say who you are,in order to check to see if you were on the list of dozens of real, average people, GOP members, and just R's off the street we never saw before, who actually showed up for over 2 months, and helped write, call, answer phones, do mail drops, man HQ,and make and put up the thousands of signs, run events, and work the Fair- on their own time, for free..to refresh a few, jaded memories, the new chair was simply left a decimated organization.. since June 2, he's raised and paid off some $38,000 in debts he was left, the HQ has been cleaned, painted, the broken machines repaired, 7 mos. of back-rent paid, and, check the ELEC reports, you'll find this was a pretty expensive effort, with the org. and the candidates raising and spending many thousands..so easy to criticize, so many "experts," :please, call HQ any time, and leave your name and # if you think you can do so much better, oh, and do write a nice, big check, too!..then, maybe the chair'll be able to afford to hire people to do what was accomplished totally by loyal volunteer people, who are trying to get past the two "sides" that were created in the past, and go forward, and make the party, the Press, and the rest of the people forget the lingering sting of the 8 dopes of "Bid Rig," that these D's were trying to squeeze one more win out of!! Grow up, step up,and help, rather than trash!!

Please. Real Republicans get sick of all the back biting and nepotism that goes on among those who are constantly aligning for control to hand out contracts and appointments. Blaming anyone else if these seats are lost shows what is making the rank and file sick of the leadership. Burry is a clown and anyone who supported her to lead the ticket did it to advance their own selfish interest, not those of the residents or party. She is just a mouth piece for the handlers just like Obama is for the dems. Funny how the faction person who is upset about anonymous postings posted anonymously.

in my opinion, internal animosities, if true, should be handled "in house," leaving any alleged issues "in the locker room," so to speak.

Same team, right?

I have no vested interest, a registered independent, but what would be the merit in airing out this potential partisan fratricide?

there is little the opposition could do with it. it would seem better to close ranks during campaign season rather than allow this to happen.

and, for the sake of full disclosure, i am just simply a naive, privelaged product of a beautiful beach bastion along the Monmouth County shore, so please correct me if i am off base in my assumptions

By the way. Check out the Monmout Republicans website....USELESS. No wonder why we can't win!

Anonymous said...

Well said, last "anonymous".

But I wouldn't be surprised if the person who described the mess our new chairman walked into is really one of us .... a good, hardworking Republican who is just frustrated and has totally mistaken the comments as an assault of sorts on the current county leadership.

Make no mistake about it. In my opinion, Mr. Oxley is a good man, and it is not his leadership that is in question. The piranhas swim under the surface and pouring more money into their coffers will not solve the problem. They must be swept out in a tide of incorrigible new leadership, and watch the tsunami of new money and energy that will flow into our new organization.

I am the anon who spoke of moronic a-holes.
Let me be clear I have no beef with the leadership(Oxley)
Their is some rank and file (and elected officia;s) though who still don't get it.

Anonymous said...

Oxley had more unity than the party has had in years--that was not an issue nearly as much as it has been. There were a heck of a lot more people trying to undermine Niemann and Puharic than Oxley. Oxley had it on a silver platter this year compared to last few cycles. No bid rig, no club monmouth and APP endorsed both our guys. He may be a nice guy, but doesn't seem to have political muscle needed for the job. Bill Dowd anyone?

"Let me be clear I have no beef with the leadership(Oxley)

Bravo! These are the folks Of whom we all seem to be speaking, NOT Oxley and his tireless crew of unpaid volunteers. It is my understanding that some of those "officials" adamantly refused to visibly support our GOP ticket this 'go-round. A team can only win if it is a team. This is the faction that must reshaped or eradicated if we are to win ... and grow.

It is my experience that the suicide gene of some Republicans to attack eachother usually doesn't take place until all the results have been tabulated and there is a clear result.

They are counting provisionals now and I would expect a recount either way. So can we hold the beat eachother up reaction for a bit?

Let's all hope that John Curley will take office as Freeholder when this is all said and done and we don't lose control of the board.

And for my money's worth - John busted his ass on the campaign trail and did an excellent job getting out there. He did all that he could to win. The blame game is completely useless.

Oh and to whoever said "anyway to get the vote out.":

We had a one-day door-to-door operation in Middletown (Which we won handingly) and there were constant phone banks in different locations for the last month or so. So I'm not sure where you were but all it would have taken was a phone call to HQ to find out the phone bank hours and locations.

This was all on extremely limited resources, which is no one's fault. I think given the conditions, everyone (an all volunteer-based office), including Chairman Oxley, did the best job they could have and more.

"He may be a nice guy, but doesn't seem to have political muscle needed for the job. Bill Dowd anyone?"

Oh please, Bernie .....
'Stayin' too long at the fair' was the start of the problem!

Anonymous said...

They just don't get it. Whether Oxley is great or not and however wonderful the volunteers are, as long as those who gain control look to benefit their friends and supporters before being good representatives of the people the party is doomed. You can see it on this site. "Get rid of the nay sayers and the GOP people who disagree." Brilliant that is how you end up with dems controlling everything because there are more of them the Reps. Burry and her crew look to crush and drive out anyone not aligned with them, that is why in a year that McCain won by 12,000 votes we are hoping to pick up 18 at the Freeholder level to keep control. I hope it is worth it.

I hope the naive person who doesn't get why there's little $$ for Rep's in the county and state is not one of us, but probably is: how do you spell: "BLUE STATE"?.. of course there's a much harder job to raise $ for all GOP candidates: look, as all D and R incumbents raced to enact "the strongest pay-to-play laws" over the past few years,to appear "clean" and above reproach, none took on and included the unions, (which run this state unimpeded), and the Dem power-brokers, north and south, who have been wheeling millions into every remaining county that ISN'T "blue", for years, and there's little any regular working GOP candidate can do about it, except to ask their own circle of fam and friends for help, or self-finance, like a Forrester, or, a Corzine!..that's why both Burry and Curley deserve credit for getting as far as they did, aided by many vol's not looking for jobs or contracts, which, now here, are nearly all bid-out, anyway!! your "job-envy, haves-have-nots" argument is wearing thin and is pretty tiring.. it's a "to the victor belongs the spoils-system", people who succeed of course want to hire some folks they are comfortable with, and do.. while we still have a body politic, and a 2-party system, that's how it'll be.. get on the bus, and help make it be the "good guys" from our party, who win!..

ps: oh, and websites are fine, for news and event-lists, to see what one may want to go to, but, they cost much time and $$ to maintain- often the choice can be for more giveaways,or extra palm cards, or another ad , and, eventually, somebody actually needs to stop criticizing and postulizing, step away from the box, and really get OUT there, and talk to, and work with, real people, and persuade and get to the polls, REAL voters!!..while you're reading websites and surfing the 'net, and bitching, you could be honestly helping the candidates of your choice meet, and greet, and, finally, get them peoples'votes!- you might actually get a sense of community, of purpose, of success!- try it, you might like it!

Anonymous said...

BINGO. A party man/woman admits that those in control of the GOP will hire their friends etc "to the victor goes the spoils" as he/She says. Guess what that is why the GOP in Monmouth is doomed those in control are of this persons mind set.
Politics 101 for those who support Burry. As noted above dems have more $$. As notesd above there are more dems now then GOP.
We can never win moving forward if we are just like the dems since they have more money and people. The GOP has to be different. Unfortunately the post above admits what many rank and file members know. "to the victor goes the spoils" is the slogan for people like Burry. That can work for a puppet like Obama who has the $$ and numbers, but it spells the end of GOP leadership in Monmouth.
Thanks alot folks, look in the mirror and you will see the problem.

apparently, unfortunately, some of you naive/simplistic idiots will never get that the idea is for Rep's. to win, and to govern better, but also to be able to help their friends, legally and properly, while governing better,too..why would a winner want to help any D's that tried to beat them??.. where has any winning pol. party NOT hired qualified folks who they were friendly with, or who helped them WIN?.. that point of view is just crazy: look at the nation or state, look at any legis. ofc: you hire whom you TRUST, not a pol. enemy!..guess it's useless trying to make some people understand the nature of politics, from the beginning of time throughout history, but again, instead of all the criticism, I'm sure the Chair would accept any positive assistance, whether in the form of financial or volunteer, grassroots, grunt-work.. give him a call, he could use some friendly, encouraging help right about now, and going forward!!..

Anonymous said...

"...give him a call..."? I know well-intentioned folks who have called him, and he is not returning their calls. So it is a little impossible to help.

The operative word (in many cases, literally)in the post about hiring those one is "friendly with" and "trusts" is the word QUALIFIED.
When UNqualified or LESSER qualified individuals get taxpayers' dollars in the form of salaries and contracts, there is no justification and the public rightly should be outraged. But on the other hand, having a connection should not disqualify competent friends of pols from getting anything either.

For far too long it is the former scenario of less-than-qualified folks .... or partners of those in power ... lining their pockets at the public's expense.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately many of us understand the "nature of politics" and people like you. Like I said you can "legally" hire your cronies but don't be surprised as the dems take control. They are much better funded then you and since you are no different then them, they will take over.
The only way GOP can win is by being different, but as the party spokesman has stated again they can legally hire their friends. That is how we get bid rig and all the other nonsense fighting.

Anonymous said...

Huh?? People like who? NO ONE should get a position based on anything other than their merit ... but in your view qualified folks who are friends of pols are not eligible?? That makes no sense either. It is outlandish and a disservice to the people served as much as antics like those with Bid Rig. The pendulum swings both ways, my friend.
