Corzine: The gift that keeps on giving?

Rumors are running rampant that Frank Lautenberg will resign his U.S. Senate seat and that Jon Corzine will resign as governor to go back to the Senate. All this would have to happen before Chris Christie is sworn in as governor on January 19, 2010.

If such a scenario plays out Corzine would face the voters again next November in a special election to retain the Senate seat for the remainder of Lautenberg's term.

What more could the NJ GOP want? Corzine at the top of the ballot two years in a row would be like hitting the lottery.

Would Corzine have to appoint himself as Lautenberg's replacement? Is that legal?

Would the Democrats be that stupid?
Oops, just answered my own question.

It has already happened in other states. Governors can appoint anyone including themselves as the new US Senator

Two questions.

In his politically weakened state, might Corzine, in the scenario you provided, face a primary challenge from another Democrat who believes that Corzine would fare even worse in a statewide race in 2010?

AND

If that happens, is that not the end of Corzine's political career?

With an ego as out of control as Corzine's, this is the best bet outside of Atlantic City. Maybe better.....

Hard to believe they would be that stupid. Also Lautenberh has the seat for 5 more years. Why would he leave. And he is no pauper, so he is not worried about pressure financial or otherwise. Plus his poll numbers have to be much better than Corzine's so it makes no sense from any perspective.

Somebody is clearly having fun with the media..Corzine couldn't win a race for dog catcher and the only way Lautenberg leaves the Senate is in a stretcher...

Art weren't you 100% sure that Corzine was supposed to resign before September and he would be replaced by Booker or Pallone? Even though everyone said he wouldn't budge?

You're not very good at political predictions Art.
