In part two of our conversation, Middletown Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger discusses the property tax cap, unfunded state mandates, and the proposed "tool kit" for municipal government reform.
The interview was taped on July 2, prior to Governor Christie's agreement with State Senate President Sweeney on a 2% property tax cap.

If bullshit was money...this man would be rich.
Typical response from the Dems/BT - never anything to back up their statement. It kills them, absolutely kills them to have someone with such credentials and accomplishment in office. I guess when you've run Larry Loigman, Irv Beaver, Pat Short, Pat Walsh, etc. over the years - all you have left is the green-eyed monster. Thanks for the entretainment Art. Btw, you were there and know a thing or two about local politics - did you feel you were being "BSed."
I may be able to shed some light on the first poster. She is a well-known resident of Lincroft who is angry with the mayor because he wouldn't go along with opening up a street during a detour near her street. It would have meant cutting down some huge, old trees, doing construction to make it wide enough at great cost, inconbeniencing the people who live there - all because of a very temporary detour. We were lucky that common sense prevailed and our neighborhood was saved. These are the kind of people who are out there in cyberspace.
Schafenberger has worn out his welcome in this town and in his own party.
This is sad but true, and if anyone denies it they're not dealing with
reality. Credentials mean nothing, because it has come down to a lack of trust in his leadership.
I'm not a Dem or BT, just a very disappointed Republican.
Anon 4:23 is not BT, so Anon 5:10 & 8:15 stop with the guessing or blame game. Other people obviously agree with BT too. Don't want to know who she is, because the problem is Scharfenberger who is our Mayor not some neighbor of yours.
Hey Art, I think 8:20 is the guy you christened "whatshisname." I've been at TC meetings and freeholder meetings and that's his schtick almost word for word. Btw, it is no more coherent here than it is in person.
If bullshit was money 5:10 & 8:15 would be rich too!!
Seemed pretty coherent to me. The Mayor is the issue here and he's out of touch. It's easy to govern in good times, but the real test has been the last 18 months where he has shown no ability to lead.
Look at Christi and see what he's done in just 6 months.
Scharfenberger has been asleep at the wheel, blaming everyone else for our problems and waiting for someone to bail him out. No ideas, no planning, just trying to get re elected and giving out awards to everyone.
