Smith A Lock For Re-election

Wally Edge is making the case that Congressman Chris Smith effectively won re-election this month thanks to his efforts to bring nine year old Sean Goldman home from Brazil to be raised by his father, Tinton Falls resident David.

Former Holmdel Deputy Mayor Alan Bateman, who abandoned another run against Rush Holt in the 12th district rather than fight Fair Haven Mayor Mike Halfacre for the GOP nomination, is wasting his efforts challenging Smith for the GOP nomination in the 4th.

Bateman would have had more party support had he 1) stuck it out it the 12th or 2)mounted a challenge Frank Pallone is the 6th. He may be too late even for the 6th nomination which for years had party leaders begging candidates to run the seemingly invincible Pallone. There is a high level NJ GOP effort to recruit a "real challenger" to Pallone for the 2010 race.

Meanwhile in the 12th district, Halfacre does not yet have the nomination locked up. There is a Princeton based investment banker testing the waters for the GOP nod.

I agree smith has it locked. There are not enough disaffected fiscal conservatives to boot him.
Catholic republicans still love him.

The Goldman kid has little to do with who republicans will back.

If Smith wants to atone for his disastrous, ill-advised vote for the carbon tax, he should demand an investigation into the bogus data used for the bill in the first place. Then, he could save face by saying he never would have voted for it if he had the true data, blah, blah, blah. I hope Smith is watching the circus in Copenhagen where every two-bit banana republic is looking for a quick pay day from the saps in the West who still cling to the global warming hoax even as Europe is in the grip of record low temperatures and snow fall.

It's a good thing this is a safe GOP spot, too bad it's Chris Smith. Not only he voted for cap&trade, he votes with the Dems very frequently. Smith has one of the lowest ratings from ACU, there are a few Dems with better ratings than him.

hey,"stop the socialists": right on, brother- and, do come "out" and please run for something, soon!!we've never seen/heard so much from Chris Smith in the 20- umpteen years he's been there: love his pro-life beliefs and fights against female slavery, etc..but, it's finally time to fish or cut bait: either you stand for our real principles, or you, along with more Dems each week, wiil be GONE in Nov., 2010!

Not sure if Alan Bateman is worthy of running in a national campaign. I was very disappointed in what I perceived as a lackluster effort in the 12th in 2008.

It's a tough, gerrymandered district for sure, but certainly Bill Spadea's effort in 2004 - where he "walked" the district and was seemingly everywhere - could be a lot more effective if emulated in 2010.

I don't believe, based on last year's performance, that Bateman is capable of giving that effort, in the 12th or anywhere else.

Glad to have Halfacre opposing Holt; he has already run a more spirited campaign almost a year out than Bateman ran at any point in 2008.

Smith is typical for what gets called a Republican around here, except for his pro life position, he walks talks and votes like a dem. He is what we call a RINO

First, I do agree that he is a lock for 2010... although he already was a lock before this latest accomplishment. But let's remember something about Smith. While you may not agree with him on every issue, don't forget he voted AGAINST the bank bailout/TARP, against the so-called 'stimulus' and he has led the fight against Obamacare. He is a solid guy.

Might I add that as much as I dislike RINO's like Smith, this year it's important to win House seats AND not lose any. After all, a RINO that votes with us 60% of the time is still better than a lib who'd vote with us 5%.

I don't know who this "Princeton based investment banker" is who is "testing the waters for the GOP nod." That said, I wish him luck, particularly if he is a conservative. Halfacre is a pro-abortion liberal that I cannot and will not support.

Art, wasn't there a post up here a few days ago predicting Halfacre would lose and paraphrasing his concession speech? Where did that post go?
