Walsh: "It's a lie."
By JJ Sullivan III
Correspondent
MIDDLETOWN- Outside Town Hall during last night's Democratic press conference, committee candidate Patricia Walsh denounced allegations of financial impropriety, calling recent reports the result of "irresponsible journalism," while demanding a change of guard within the current municipal administration.
When asked for a reaction to an article posted on MoreMonmouthMusings concerning the non-disclosure of roughly $30,000 in funds dating back to 1999, Walsh simply stated that the story was false, and that both the mayor, Republican Gerard Scharfenberger, and myself were both liars who had contributed to a patently erroneous accusation.
"First of all I want to say that [JJ Sullivan is] a reporter from a partisan blog," responded Walsh to my first inquiry, addressing the dozen or so assembled supporters. "[JJ Sullivan] took information from only GOP sources. I received one e-mail and did not have the time to collect that information that shows what [MoreMonmouthMusings} printed was a lie. So, I call it irresponsible journalism and that's the end of it."
Responding to the accusations by Walsh after the workshop meeting, Scharfenberger remained nonplussed.
He said the information and discussion were based on hard evidence, not speculation, and would stand behind his statements until presented with evidence to the contrary.
Press Conference......
Being one of two reporters present, I actively attempted to solicit a response from the candidate. Yet Walsh had the same retort for repeated questions about the documents, a collection of depositions, copied checks, financial disclosure forms and legal correspondences.
"Mr. Sullivan, I gave you your comment: You printed a lie. In front of all these people, I told you, you printed a lie. That is the answer."
In continued attempts to clarify whether the roughly $30,000 in checks written to Walsh were classified as loans or gifts, Walsh refused to engage beyond the uniform rebuttal offered at the onset.
Walsh refused to respond when asked whether the checks had been reported on a financial disclosure sheet or a tax return since giving the deposition.
"[JJ Sullivan is] not a responsible journalist, [JJ Sullivan does] not seek the truth and so, if you wanna throw more questions at me your gonna get the same answers: You lie," she said.
The former BOE president was again asked whether the funds were loans or gifts. Walsh continued her response uninterrupted, disregarding the question and instead speaking about the mayor's comments in the article.
"The mayor lied!" Walsh exclaimed. "You know that is something! I think the position of mayor in this town is a very responsible position, just like the president of the School Board. And you know what, I don't think our mayor has acted responsible. He or she should be somebody that we can look up to and is responsible for all residents, whether they be black, white, Hispanic, Republican or Democrat; and that is not happening."
After the question and answer segment of the press conference was concluded, I again attempted to approach Walsh, if for no other reason than to gain clarity regarding the Web site's alleged errors.
"Print that: It's a lie," snapped Walsh, declining to elaborate any further as an elderly gentleman chided me for the persistence.
"Why don't you back off?" he demanded.
"Sir, I am only trying to get answers," I responded as he took a stand next to the longtime BOE member.
Asserted Walsh, "Yes, and I gave you one: It is a lie."
Concurrently, attempting to speak over Walsh, the man angrily said that I had received the only answer I was going to get.
After two more questions were shrugged off, the article was again categorized as "a lie;" I had "shown myself to be irresponsible."
With those parting words the candidates were taken inside by party head Joe Caliendo, who said, "JJ, please."
Mayor responds.......
"This is a legal court deposition and these are actual checks. I am providing my opinion about the evidence and statements provided within the sworn depositions," Scharfenberger said. "That is very clear cut, its not someone's interpretation and it's not hearsay; these are court documents we discussed."
Scharfenberger said he made no assumptions from the information provided in the documents cited in the report.
"You have to stand by [the information contained in the deposition.]," Scharfenberger said. "If Mrs. Walsh could clarify it, I think the entire community would welcome that."
For the record, Walsh was sent two e-mails (2:05 pm and 2:25 pm for a 7 pm deadline) and the recipient of three phone calls (before and after the e-mails were sent). Two voice messages were left on the number provided on Walsh's press releases.
The 7pm deadline was pushed back over two hours in hopes of contacting Walsh, as I felt that the gravity and credibility of the report would be impacted by the absence of her comments.

Where there is smoke their is fire! Great job JJ! If you want to find an irresponsible journalist, look no further than the Caliendo Crier's Melissa Gagme.
I actually feel sorry for the CC reporter. Aside from showing the effects of too many free meals from the restaurants she reviews, can you imagine having to put your name to a bunch of crap to attack her boss's enemies just to keep your job? Imagine the laughter from the interviewer when she goes for a real job and she tells them who she wrote for previously?
JJ was more like Perez Hilton than a reporter the way he interupted the conference! What a neocon! All he did was start asking questions about checks, something not brought up by either Pat Walsh or Jim Grenafege. After being put in his place, he kept raising his hand until my buddy had to get loud and the candidates finished up inside. Teach this kid some manners!
Note to the anonymous posters trying to change the subject or assert that JJ or Scharfenberger are lying without offering anything to dispute the facts reported:
I'm not posting those comments. Start your own blogs.
If the Walsh campaign can refute the allegations with documented facts they will be published here.
Angry rants based on nothing will not be published here.
C'mon Art, if no one is allowed to post negative things about me than all traffic to this Web site will stop.
And Perez Hilton? That is a terrible comparison. I did my job last night, got a few extra stories and attempted to open new channels of communication.
As for Mrs Walsh, if she is indeed correct in asserting the report is inaccurate, than I owe her my most sincere apology. Either way, I respect her and her running mate, Mr Grenafege, and hope to put things right in the near future so we can move on to the next subject and put this thing to bed.
How can anyone brush off copies of checks and a court deposition as "lies"?
I have to make a comment about anonymous # 3. JJ did not and as the dems like to say, let me say that again, did not interupt the conference. He attemped to ask a question after both candidates spoke. He was asked if he was a reporter or working for a blog. Why was that question asked of him, but not of the other members of the public when they asked a question? After I asked a question about Mrs. Walsh's transparance in government regarding the board of education meetings I was followed to my car by someone wanting to know when this happened. I think the man thought he was going to intimidate me, but I really had to get to the gym. Anyway the answer I got from Mrs. Walsh was something about Robert's Rules. She has no problem having a seperate meeting with the Board President while the regular Board meeting is going on. That is transparance in government at its finest. I firmly believe that residents need to get more involved with town committee and board of education meetings. Andrew Bane. P.S. Please forgive any misspellings.
Thanks Andrew, and welcome.
This is going to be huge. Heads are going to roll if you finish what you started! Follow the money!!!!!
Schoor DePalma goes down for $15,000. This is a complicated story but there is a light at the end. Keep digging and you will find it.
This is exactly what Ted Stevens was indicted for in Alaska too.
Maybe your "journalist" should look the part of credibility. He need a bath,a shave,a haircut and a new "suit". Then he'll look the part. As for you, what's that you say about assholes? Look in the mirror before you judge others.

What does this have to do with the story? Leave it to the Dems to resort to personal attacks rather than deal with the facts.
As for me, I embraced my assholeness a long time ago. You should try it.
Who ever said I was a democrat? Did it ever occur to you the world doesn't view everything through the lenses you do ???? Your kind of politics is a cesspool. No wonder people are turned off and some of us just don't want you to get away with it.You'll look good in brown if you're wrong!!!!

Who ever said I was a democrat?
I did.
Did it ever occur to you the world doesn't view everything through the lenses you do ????
Yes
Your kind of politics is a cesspool.
You're candidate accepts $30,000, doesn't report it as legally required and my politics are cesspool? That's how I know you're a Democrat.
No wonder people are turned off and some of us just don't want you to get away with it.
Never let that facts stop you.
You'll look good in brown if you're wrong!!!!
I look good in brown either way. I'm not wrong.
By the way, can you name a place in New Jersey where Democrats are doing a better job governing than Republicans are doing in Middletown and Monmouth County?
No offense but my pedigree is unassailable. My family has been in this country since Titus Knapp fought for the red coats and retreated to a plantation in Canada. I may have come from class looking unkempt, but I had no time to put on my wardrobe. Ill see you next time and we will see who needs some cleaning up. Are you nouveau riche? Too bad. I'm old money, anonymous wannabe
Walsh owes the taxpayers more that the typical "it's a lie" comment. Obviously she was caught off guard,& was shocked, she didn't remember her past claims! The tangled web she weaves! Oh Pat, just resign now, save yourself the embarrasment..then again , I love it! You just can't make this stuff up!!
Wrong on all counts.....you just can't seem to accept that people could possibly disagree with you and be anything but democrats.Middletown needs cleaning up,big time,a convicted felon former committeeman, sexual harrassment suits, irresponsible tax assessor ,huge investments standing on contaminated sites, prejudice against Latinos, what next? .....and the republicans are responsible for it all.Time for change to restore some integrity to government.Monday's meeting was classic of the bullshit the current mayor is capable of.Hope he and his candidate have fat wallets to defend slander suits if as usual he doesn't know his rear from a hole in the ground!
Bring on the slander suits. And while you are at it, produce the evidence that this "loan" was repaid.
Right now Walsh and her cronies are praying that this issue goes away. It won't. All she had to say last night was that she paid back the loan. She acted like every other Democrat caught recently with her hand in the cookie jar claiming this to be "lies". She wanted higher office, well she'll be able to spend time in good company with Wayne Bryant.
Mr Bane, thank you for correcting that miscreant.
Anon - I display my manners and sophistication at a level that you, you being a throw-back to the dawn of man, a level of refinery you cannot attempt to fathom in your Sunday best.
I bet you are still using two rocks and some dry grass to start the grill.
Hey man, I dont think its right making fun of cavemen, but those Geico commercials are funny (no offense)
Typical Walsh M.O. threaten to sue people to silence them when they bring out the truth about her years of corruption and higher taxes and spending on the school board. The truth is ultimate defense to any defamation claim. Even if she pays or paid the money back, she's not off the hook. Why was it not disclosed as required by law in the first place? And what about the checks deposited into Walsh's personal account from he "friends of" account? Also, why did she cast votes on matters in which she was clearly conflicted? And why would someone give her this much money in the first place if they didn't have a very vested interest? And why did she stick the taxpayers with tom stokes legal bills from her false claims that were dismissed against him that required the school board to pay his legal fees by law? why did she make the motion to allow verizon to construct cell towers on school property? Why did she vote to increase taxes and spenxding $50 million? Why does she have sidebar discussion in the middle of school board meetings outside of public eye? So many questions and so few responses.
To the last anoymous: I asked her about her sidebar discussion at her press conference Monday night & she said something about Roberts Rules. I didn't hear her whole answer because someone was talking over her, at me. She has also stated that she always make motions to vote on matters. In meetings that I attend in the Fire Department, you don't make a motion unless you have a strong intersted in it. I believe I was tolds at a BOE meeting that a motion and second must be made before there can be discussion on it. If she was so strongly against the cell tower and increasing taxes, you just DO NOT make a motion that you are in favor of them, like Mrs Walsh did. As I stated in an early post Mrs. Walsh having meetings behind the book case while the Board of Ed meeting is going on is transparance in government at its finest. I must state that I did run for the Board of Education in April and enjoyed the experience. I had to get signatures and some other info and turn that in. I did not spend any money and still received about 20% of the vote and only lost by a couple hundred votes. Alot of my votes were by word of mouth. I would consider doing it again. Andrew Bane
Andrew, you should try again.
